Pregnancy sickness

Pregnancy sickness is very common in pregnancy. It is thought that the number may be as high as 70 to 80 per cent of women are affected. The sickness can vary from slight discomfort to vomiting. The sickness can start even before you miss a period and are normally away after the third month but can in some cases be there throughout the pregnancy.

Pregnancy sickness is also referred to as ‘morning sickness’ but it can occur at any time during the day.

What is the cause of pregnancy sickness?
Hormone human gonadotrophin (HCG)

Despite the amount of research that has been undertaken, the causes are not fully understood. It may well be a combination of different things. The hormone human gonadotrophin (HCG) is thought to be one of the culprits. This hormone is prevalent in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and then the levels drop. Lower levels of this hormone may be the reason that pregnancy sickness tends to ease off after 12 weeks.

Is Oestrogen a cause?

Oestrogen is also a potential cause as this hormone rises throughout the pregnancy. This hormone may increase your sense of smell which may trigger the sickness.

Tiredness?

This is thought to be a cause along with low blood pressure and low sugar levels. Taking short naps can hep combat this.

Why does your body do this?

Many people have speculated that the body does this for a reason. Many think the body is protecting you from harmful substances and research has linked it to a lower level of miscarriage. There is thought to be a link between nausea and vomiting and a healthily baby. Research points to an increased weight of the placenta that supports this theory. More evidence and research is needed to back up these claims.

Eating tips to help with pregnancy sickness

Suck peppermints
Drink plenty of water
Eat food with the vitamin b6 for example potatoes, bananas, brown rice, fish, lean meat, and poultry.

Too Much Weight during Pregnancy: Unhealthy for Mom and Baby

Pregnancy may impose a challenge for many moms. Women, who gain excessive weight during trimesters, are at risk of various pregnancy complications such as developing gestational diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure and have greater chance of undergoing Cesarean section, rather than normal vaginal delivery. Obese individuals are of great risk for blood clots and pre-eclampsia, in addition to complications accompanying a C-section.

New research suggests that women who gained too much weight during gestation went to gain an average of 44 lbs over the next 10-20 years. On the other hand, those women who gained moderately little weight were able to keep 20-pound of weight on average during the same time.

One study also suggests that the heavier a woman is, the fewer pounds she should gain during trimesters. According to the World Health Organizations, Lung and Blood Institute, and the National Heart, underweight individuals with body mass index (BMI) of 18.5, should gain on average 28 to 50 pounds if carrying a single fetus, whole healthy women having normal BMI should gain only 25-35 pounds; overweight women with BMI of 25-29.9 should gain 15-25 lbs; and obese women with BMI of 30 and above, should gain 11 to 20 pounds. For women carrying a twin should also gain weight depending on her health status. For instance if she belongs to a normal weight, she should gain 37-54 pounds; while overweight women should gain 31-50 lbs; and lastly, obese women should gain 25-45 pounds only.

Almost 50 percent of the pregnant women in Western countries today are either overweight or obese, in contrast to four decades ago, which was only 25%. If you begin out your pregnancy being overweight or even obese, there is a probability that you will keep the weight on after giving birth. In 2009, one study showed 3 out of 5 women who have gained excessive weight during their nine-month journey, retained almost 40 percent of the extra pounds a full year after they give birth.

Keep in mind that the fetus might also be affected. Pregnant women that have unhealthy weight have an increased rate of developing spina bifida, neural tube defects (NTDs), which is strongly associated with maternal obesity. A 2007 study showed that, babies born to obese women have greater chance to have the neural tube defect, even if taking folic acid supplements appropriately before conceiving. At that point, they concluded that the increase risk could be highly due to undiagnosed diabetes mellitus. It has also found that other obesity-related risk increases 20 percent of limb abnormalities, heart defects, abnormal urethral and anal opening for males, and diaphragmatic hernia, interfering normal lung development.

To ensure optimal pregnancy outcomes for both mother and the baby, it is recommended to be physically fit and healthy before becoming pregnant, monitor weight while keeping it in a normal range, taking more fruits and vegetables, exercise and take safe dietary supplements. It is best to seek some advice for necessary guidelines for a healthy pregnancy. Make every endeavor to follow the advice of your medical doctor which should include getting plenty of rest, eating healthy foods, avoiding smoking, drinking alcohol, and taking anything substance that is toxic to your body or your unborn baby.

Baby Tantrums

What is the best way to react when your baby takes a tantrum?

First we will take a look at why babies take tantrums, below are the most common reasons.

They are tired – put your baby down for a nap. Try to get your baby into a routine as quickly as possible with naps. There need for sleep changes when they get older so you need to reflex the changing needs for sleep.

They are hungry – Again routine with meals and snacks are needed. Same goes with breastfeeding. If they are not taking their food try a little water that has been boiled and cooled. Sometime they are just thirsty.

Frustrated that they can’t communicate there needs – They want something back they can’t get it! Babies want to communicate to you but they are not capable yet. You need to read the signs for what you babies needs are.

Over stimulation – Your baby sometimes just wants a bit of peace and quiet!

They are uneasy in the environment they are in - Babies can feel anxiety if their main cares leaves, the best way to regulate this after the first 3 months make sure you have periods away from the baby so they are used having time away. Having a baby with you 24/7 will make them clingy to you, so make a habit as soon as to have time away.

So how do you go about trying to control these tantrums?

You need to commit yourself to how you are going to react and then be consistent. Get your partner to agree and also grandparents and other who care for the child. If they child finds that throwing a tantrum gets what they want they will continue with this behavior. Remember that tantrums can also come out of just needing attention. The natty corner trick does work when you persevere with it.

The say love is the most important thing you can give a child and they are right. Make sure you are giving your child the attention and praise that they require. Try to give them your 100% attention for activities every day. On the flip side of this they must learn how to play on their own as well. Find the correct balance with this and stick to it.
