Adventures in mothering!

So being unemployed and trying to be a stay at home mom is not easy. Everyone told me it wasn't but more it' just the juggling act that I still can't figure it out! It is getting better, the routines.

I'm exploring ways to save money, first by starting to be a Krazy Coupon Lady, yes I will have a 15 pound binder with coupons soon! I have started compling the coupons but not shopping yet, well really because there is no money this week!

We have been using our freezer meals which is great. I have been baking a lot. We need to find a way to get more cheap snacks. Not that we can even keep them in the hosue but they are SO expensive!

Ashlee and I have our morning routine, getting dressed needs work for both of us! You know what I'm talking about the SAHM mom rut, staying in PJ's all day! And Ashlee well she likes hanging in her diaper!

I'm learning a lot about Home Improvement, some the hard way but that's ok. My husband thinks I'm funny because I start projects and buy the stuff I need weekly, pieces at a time with what we can afford. But hey no more carpet in teh bathrooms soon!

I also want to start doing something scheduled with Carson in the afternoon, like crafts which he LOVES doing. We are also thinking of Martial Arts, but he has o start getting ready in the morning!

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Little Man and the BUS!

So here is the story and I'm not backing his behavior BUT there may be a reason why! First off he takes an herbal remedy called Brightspark to help calm him and take away some hyperactivity. WELL he is suppose to take it three times a day. When he started the nurse at the school said since we give it to him at 7AM he should have it at school around 1 or 2. WELL she has been giving it to him at 10:30AM! No wonder the kid has issues in the afternoon! And then come to find out the principal did not even TELL him he was kicked off the bus! I went to school to get him, like I was told to do and he was not there! He substitute teacher sent him home on the bus! So I go to the bus stop and get him and told him there was a mistake and he was not suppose to get a "pride" certificate for the week since he got kicked off the bus. He said "I got kicked off the bus?" GEEZ! So long day but he did really good considering he knew the rules were no electronics if you can't ride the bus. No whining, he took it like a MAN!

Early Potty Training

When is it the "right" time. every child is different. For my son it was around 3. When he could tell me, "I'm going potty." We actually held off until 3 1/2 for our convenience with a trip to Disneyland, potty training in an amusement park did not sound like fun! So when is the "right" time? I found a great article at Connect With Kids.

from www.connectwithkids.com, Emily Halevy CWK Producer

I would suggest meeting with someone who had done it successfully, visiting websites that might offer information, and having a very open mind. Realizing that it may not be the perfect answer in every family, but in some families this may be something worth trying.”
– Karen Dewling, M.D., pediatrician

It's one of the great questions of the ages: when should you begin to potty train your toddler? Researchers at Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital have narrowed the window down to between 24 and 32 months of age. But this hasn't stopped some parents from attempting to train their babies even younger ... much younger.

It seems that for the Young family it's working. "Psss. You need to go bud? Do you need to go?" Diana asks her seven-month-old son, Dorian, while he's sitting on his infant potty seat.
When he has to go, Diana taught him to make a sign. "See," she points, "now he's doing the potty sign. Do you see his right hand there like that?"

But is he really potty trained?

"Children, when they're toilet trained as young infants are not truly toilet trained," explains pediatrician Dr. Karen Dewling, "Their parents become trained, their caregivers become trained to recognize the infants cues that they need to void or defecate."

She explains that the biggest problem is young babies can't do very much. "Toilet training is a very complex skill that requires the child to recognize the need to go, to control the need to go, to be able to get to the bathroom, remove their clothing, do what they need to do, flush, wash their hands, very complicated language and motor skills are required for the true process."

So, should you try to potty train a child before the age or two or three? She says it may not work, but there's no harm in trying. "I think that a caregiver who's able to recognize a baby's cues is very in tune with that baby, and that's probably a very good thing."

"My friend's say, 'I have never seen a happier baby,' and I think it's because he knows that I'll meet his needs," says Diana, "He doesn't need to cry to get my attention, cause he has my attention all the time."

All that attention may seem like a lot of work, but Diana says it's worth it. "The biggest benefit has been the connection between us. I just feel like I'm a good mother. I feel like I'm doing something for him that he appreciates, and that he needs, and it's the right thing."

On average, children begin potty training around age 2, and girls generally potty train faster than boys. Experts at Southern Cloth Baby recommend looking for the following signs that may mean your child is ready to begin potty training:
  • Able to stay dry for an hour or two
  • Awareness of bodily functions
  • Interest in being clean and dry
  • Able to understand and follow simple instructions
  • Interest in wearing training pants instead of diapers
  • Simple self-dressing
  • Interest or curiosity about bathroom habits

However, the experts recommend not to start potty training if the child will be experiencing big changes in the near future such as:

  • A new baby in the family
  • Moving to a new house or school
  • A parent starting work
  • The holiday season

Tips for Parents
Potty training can be one of the most daunting tasks faced by you and your child during the early years. Dr. Claire Albright, psychologist and parenting coach, offers the following tips that may make the transition easier:

  • Dress your child in underwear at about 28 months of age when the child is at home. Today's disposable diapers provide almost no feedback to the child about when they are wet. Your child will feel uncomfortable in their "big kid" pants when they are wet and may therefore feel motivated to try using the toilet.
  • Allow your child to run around naked when you are at home. Having to deal with the urge to eliminate will be much more noticeable to your child when there is nothing to catch it in but the potty-seat.
  • Look for signs of potty training readiness in your child. These signs of readiness may include telling you when they are using the bathroom in their diaper, requesting that you change a messy diaper, keeping their diaper dry for hours at a time, showing enthusiasm after going to the bathroom, etc.
  • Begin potty training at an appropriate age. Potty training becomes less difficult as your child gets older. Potty training prematurely can make a child feel misunderstood, alone and rebellious. It is often best to wait until the child is three years old to focus on potty training.
  • Make potty training fun by giving your child little rewards for sitting on the toilet with no diaper

You could use stickers, crackers, small, inexpensive toys, etc. Using candy could produce sugar cravings and tooth decay, however.

  • Purchase a couple of potty training videos designed for toddler viewing. The research shows that the best way to teach any behavior is to have role models demonstrating the behavior. (Live models are more effective than video modeling.)
  • Pour cheerios or crackers into the toilet for little boys to take 'aim' at. This challenge taps into a little boy's natural interest in hitting targets.
  • Purchase several toddler-level books about children being potty trained. Potty training feels more natural and less stressful to a child who has been exposed to the process at "storybook time."
  • Consider allowing other trusted adults to help you to potty train your child. Many preschoolers respond more quickly to input from grandparents, aunts and trusted babysitters than they do to input from their parents in the area of potty training. Some parents report that a grandparent was able to potty train their child during one weekend away.
  • Make potty training a top priority on a consistent basis when you have the emotional and physical energy to do it.

Ahh Kids At Christmas

So all night on Friday and all day on Saturday Little Man kept asking me if he had to wear the earrings his friend "Turtle" bought him. Hmm I wondered, I know he chose Little Man's gift himself but his mom would not have let him buy him earrings would she?

Saturday night we had our friends over for dinner as we do every year. We exchanged gifts and no earrings. I was not sure what he was talking about.

Then I heard the story of the year from Turtle's mom!

Little Man was over at their house and there was a jewelry box on her table. He was asked not to touch it. He said "It's my Christmas present isn't it?"

He was told in fact it was not. But he kept insisting it was.

Son finally Turtle's mom said, "Yes it is your present we bought you earrings from the jewelry store."

To his disappointment Little Man said "But I can't wear earrings I have no holes."

My friend simply explained we will just add holes to his ears then for him to wear them.
LOL so after all that "sneaking" he did not get earrings for Christmas. But he was sure worried for the week that he was getting earrings and that we would give him holes to wear them in!

Family Update Time!

We have all been SICK! Can't wait for us all to get well at the same time! I feel it coming soon! We have been sick consecutively for the past 6 weeks. NOT fun! Little Man missed his first 3 days of school and got behind in reading!
Little Princess sounds horrible but if feeling better every day. She is now able to sit herself up from the laying position and still crawling backwards and occasionally forwards. But she is already pulling herself up to her knees and sometimes standing position so I think walking will be sooner than her brother was!
Little Man loves school but seems to have trouble understanding the concept of "personal space". I am constantly getting calls from school that he cannot keeps his hands to himself. So we ordered a book and found some games online to help him out with that. Who knew teaching a child could be SO hard!
He is loving to learn to read. He sounds out all kinds of words and even wrote his letter to Santa a couple of weeks ago. It is SO cute. His teacher told me to let him write phonetically in the beginning so Santa is "santu" and good is "god". This is one to keep for the scrapbook.
Speaking of scrapbooking, I need to get started on that again! Little Man is 5 and I only have made it through his first year! And have not even started on Little Princesses!
Little Man also found a love of board games! He cannot get enough of them.
Well off to clean house I go!

I don't co-sleep

We don't co-sleep in our house. But I would if I could!

They do grow up so quickly. I want to hold them and cuddle them forever. Yes I am having a bit of "working mom guilt" and having my "baby" start Kindergarten next week does not help.

So far I have missed it all with Little Princess, the first laugh, rolling from back to tummy and vice versa. The only part I did not miss which made the guilt even more was "ma ma ma ma". Yes I know it was unintentional and she did not know she was making my heart melt, but I witnessed it first hand with daddy and brother at my side.

A good friend of mine lost her son at 23 weeks gestation. Since then I don't want to leave my kids. I've missed it all and don't want them to grow up without experiencing it all first hand with them. In an instant for whatever reason they could be gone.

Little Man is starting Kindergarten next week. I missed the first steps, his first word, his first crawl, and I don't want to miss it all for #2. I am lucky to be able to take some time off to spend with Little Princess and Little Man before his first big day at school. He is so excited to spend time with mommy.

If we could afford it I would have 5, yes I would love to have MORE children. We could probably make ends meet except medical insurance, the never ending set back.

I encourage all of you, to hug your children every day, and even though sometimes/often they can be a handful (yes I know they can, many times several times a day), tell them you love them and that you would never change anything about them. I have never thought of myself to want to be a stay at home mom. With Little Princess I feel more prepared and ready to take on that roll, but financially this is not possible.

Cherish every moment, for they vanish in an instant and only happen once. Love your children, husband or wife and family for they will always be there for you.

I did not drop off the face of the earth

But I did go in a Hot Air Balloon ride! Sorry readers I have been SO busy! My readership has dropped, as I foresaw. But I am still here and hopefully ready to rock again! So let's catch up.
Little Princess is 5 1/2 months old now. She is rolling over and has started veggies. She has had peas, avacados, and sweet potatoes. So far so good! She is teething now and very cranky at times. That paired with a nice cold is making her miserable and not a whole lot of sleep at night either!
Little Man just lost his first tooth! And he is so super excited to start school. He is having a tough times not telling us "no" and "I don't want to" but we are working on it.

And like I sid we did go on a hot air balloon ride for our 10th anniversary. It was fun. VERY loud and actually very warm.

Other than that life if as crazy as ever! Hope to hear from you all soon.

Milestones!

This past week we have been full of milestones!
First Little Man has not only one but TWO loose teeth! Both of this front two bottom teeth are loose and the adult teeth are already growing in behind them. We keep telling him to play with them so they will fall out soon!
Little Princess had a very exciting weekend! First off, solid foods! We started this weekend with avocados! YUM! She was not so sure about the texture but did not seem to mind the taste.
Next, rolling over! She rolled over for daddy last weekend but only him and brother saw it. But this weekend she was all over the place. Friday night she had problems going to bed because she was fighting sleep and kept rolling herself over and getting even more mad because she was stuck on her stomach! So much to my surprise when she woke up Monday at 3:30 am to eat she was fully asleep on her stomach! (Yes I went in to check on her). And again in the morning was asleep on her stomach as well. And yes she is only getting up ONCE a night now. Anywhere from 1am-5am. Then will sleep until 8am or 9am if you let her!
My favorite milestone so far, "ma ma ma ma."!!!!! And then I hear "She said 'brother' did you hear her?" coming from Little Man!
Cherish every moment, because they grow so quickly and in an instant it can all be over.
Other than that life is as crazy as ever! Don't forget to check out www.247moms.com on Tuesdays at 7PM PST for ALL moms!
I will try to post pictures soon.
Fllow me on Twitter (tanyapeila), FriendFeed (tanyapeila), and Flickr (carson2005) to see them sooner!

I'm Back! Week 13

Yes ladies and gentlemen, I'm back from my Blogcation! So we made it through three months! YEAH! Little Princess is smiling and cooing a lot! She also tried to laugh but no sound comes out so it is SO cute! No rolling over yet but desperately trying. We got a Bumbo seat and still a little bit wobbly but she loves to try and sit up like a big girl. Her favorite thing, kissing noises! She thinks it is hilarious! She is up to about 13 pounds. Still in 0-3 months clothing! Just started getting up only twice a night this past weekend!

Little Man is growing SO fast too! Just bought him size 13 kids shoes! He only have 8 more days of preschool left and he will officially be a Kindergartner! They do grow SO fast! He has a couple more t-ball games. And of course loves any type of book and video game. He also has taken a liking to Bakugan's even though he does not know how to "play" it.

Me and Milkman are great, still adjusting to two children. Yes we are still sleeping in separate rooms! But we did that with the first too! Before you know it Little Princess will be in her own room and daddy and mommy will be in the same bed again. Some think it is odd that we do this but it works for us!

That is our update for now. I will try to post some more pics later this week and/or next week!

Week 8

We have officially made it through two months. It has been GREAT! Little Princess is wake all the time. She has her 8 week appointment this week so we will see how big she is. We will also be doing more pictures this week. Next week mommy goes back to work full time. We changed bottles and she hardly spits up or burps anymore. Once again she pooped on Daddy. She only poops like once a week and it seems to always be with Daddy, or on him! She is a VERY good baby. She only cries when she is hungry. Still hoping for more sleep soon.

Week 6

So we still get up ever 3 hours at night. Mommy was hoping it would have stretched to every 4 hours by now! I make ALL sorts of noises and as still as gassy as every! I can out fart all the people in our family. I am very talented as in I can sneeze and pass gas at the same time! I don't like to sit still when mommy takes my picture so our friend Sarah did my 1-month photos for us! They turned out GREAT! Thanks Sarah!

Week 4

Well we have officially made it through our first month of life! Man are her cheeks getting chubby too! But they are SO cute I just want to pinch them every time! We are still sleeping in 3 hours increments and are now more awake during the day. We seem to have started a small routine as in we are awake for a couple hours first thing in the morning around 8am and then another two hours again around 5pm or 6pm. Other than that it is just off and on throughout the day. But after I am awake that long I sleep VERY soundly (not a lot of grunting). She does still LOVE to grunt though. People have asked how I get any sleep. I have learned her noises. She is a very good baby and only fusses when she is hungry. Still very gassy. She can put daddy and brother to shame passing gas and pooping! Mommy, daddy and brother are all still good. Brother is very excited when he gets to help. Here is a video of them and also of her grunting.

Week 3

Well at our third week of life Little Princess is doing GREAT! I have always gone to the chiropractor but have never believed in that "magic" that they can make everything better. HOWEVER, on my first trip back to the chiropractor this week, Dr. Jon Pettibon asked how Little Princess was doing and I explained to him her excessive spitting up. He asked if he could take a look and adjust her. Sure no problem with me. He did a tiny adjustment on her back and neck. And she has not spit up since! What a miracle! Especially since I had gone through 6 bibs just that day! Got to run baby girl is hungry!

Week 2

We made it through two weeks of life! Little Princess still sleeps a lot and is only up for 10-15 minutes at a time. On the rare occasion around 9:30PM she is up for almost 45 minutes.

We have ALMOST got the eating down. She only really spits up once a day. We have a two week well child today so we will see how much she weighs now!
The jaundice looks SO much better. Only the whites of her eyes still look a little yellow. But the doctor said that is the last to go away.
She had found her fingers and HATES to have her arms in blankets. That runs in the family!
She gets up every couple of hours to eat at night. Every once in a while she will sleep for 3-4 hours too!
I am taking it as easy as I can. Running around after Big Brother who is still having a hard time adjusting at times. And I can't stand to be cooped up in the house. We have been walking in the evening while Little Man rides his bike. It is nice to get some fresh air and let Little Man blow off some steam!
Little Princess makes the funniest noises constantly. All through the night even. But we are learning the differences between, I'm hungry, I'm pooping or I have gas!

Little Princess has arrived!

Here are the details:

Ashlee Faith Michelle Peila

Born March 1, 2009 (36 weeks, 3 days gestation)

6:01a.m.

6 lbs. 15 oz.

19 inches long

Long story short, went in Saturday with regular contractions but not too hard. Since I had Little Man in hours they wanted me to come in and get checked. I was still dilated to a 4 (had been since Monday). They did a biophysical profile and found her amniotic fluid level was slightly low and she was not moving around as much as they wanted her to. So at first they were going to send me home then they were going to give me some pills to thin my cervix. Then they decided to induce with Potossin (spelling). Started Potossin at 8pm on Saturday. By 2:30 a.m. contractions were good o I took the epidural. However there was no progress, still at a 4. So they decided to brake my water at 4:15. By 5a.m. I was at a 6. I called family to come up. 5:30, 8cm. 5:59 a.m. time to push. One long push later there she was! She had low blood sugar so unfortunately they took heel blood every three hours until 8 a.m. the next morning so she does not like her feet being touched now. She finally passed the blood sugar test though and got a bath and we left yesterday around 5pm. Big brother thinks she is pretty cool!

Preparing Your Older Child for the New Baby

SO most of you know my now we are anxiously awaiting baby #2, aka Little Princess. I have been searching all over the web for resources for preparing Little Man for her arrival.
I found this wonderful article on Natural Mom Talk Radio written by Carrie Huggins that got me started!

Preparing Your Older Child for the New Baby
September 14, 2008

I remember hearing horror stories about older kids and their jealousy towards the new baby in the house. One friend of mine even said her daughter tried to suffocate her baby with a pillow!
can’t imagine how that must have felt. It was also totally foreign to me because I didn’t have any trouble at all with my toddlers trying to hurt their new sibling. I never even saw any signs of rivalry or upset at all.

I think it’s because of some of the things I did during the pregnancy and in the first few hours, days and weeks after I gave birth.

Here are some of those things. I hope they help you if you’re about to go through this!

Sell them on “big brother” or “big sister”.

Speak in positive terms to them about what it means to be a big sis or big brother. Really play up the importance of their role and help them to feel special and needed. You will want to discuss how they can be your helper and how much you need them because after the birth you will be sore and tired.

You may want to assign them a specific task, something age appropriate. For a younger child, fetching diapers for you might be a good one. With my babies, I invited the older toddler to come and join us during diaper changes to involve them. We would chat and I would let them help any way they could, and it was a pleasant time. Help your child to appreciate how much you need their help.

Don’t plan any other major changes.

This would not be a good time to introduce any other major changes into their life, such as potty training, different sleeping arrangements or any other similar changes. You don’t want to overwhelm them nor add any added stress to their lives or yours.

If your toddler is still nursing, there is no reason to stop during your pregnancy or even afterwards when the new baby arrives. Many moms have found that tandem nursing (breastfeeding siblings who are not twins) is very rewarding and a wonderful way to ease the transition for the older child.

When they are assured of your place in their lap, they are not as likely to be jealous or resent the new baby. I found this to be absolutely true with mine. My toddlers were all still nursing when their siblings were born, and it was wonderful to help them adjust. I shared my story in the link above.

Talk to them.

Children understand more than we think. So, spend some time talking with them about the big event. You can tell them about what will happen when you go to have the baby, where they will be staying, and what they can expect. If you are having the baby at home or in a birthing center, you might want to consider allowing them to be with you at the birth. Children who are close by the mother during her labor are more likely to view the new baby as “ours” instead of an alien intruder! Some parents have found it helpful to read books that talk about getting a new baby in the house. These often explain how new babies need constant care and feeding.
It’s also helpful to share the story of their own birth with your toddler. Young children seem to love to hear the story of their birth! Talk about how it was such a happy day for you because you finally got to meet them. Tell them details, and let them watch birth videos if you have them, and allow them to go through their baby books and pictures.

Involve them in the pregnancy.

Take your older child to prenatal appointments if you can. This helps them to start bonding with the unborn child. This is a lot easier if you’re getting care from a midwife, who will welcome your other children and allow them to listen to the heartbeat or play with the stethoscope and other equipment! My kids always had fun when we visited the midwife for our appointments.
My oldest son even cut his two baby sister’s cords when they were born. I have pictures of him all decked out as Obi-Wan Kenobi, complete with light sabre, when his first sister was born. He was so protective of her and called her Padme for the first few months of her life.

Get help.

Going from one to two (or two to three, and on and on!) is a wonderful time to ask friends, family, Grandparents and others for a little help. While you and the baby are resting, could someone play with your toddler, arrange a playdate or take them to the park for a couple of hours?

A little extra one on one time with a beloved adult can make up for the fact that you are going to be giving the toddler a little less attention for awhile. This is a time for Dad to step up too. While he does need time to bond with the newborn, this can be a time of growth in the older child as he embraces Dad as someone who can also meet his needs.

Watch your language.

When the baby arrives, be careful how you phrase things. If your older child asks you for something and you can’t help them because you’re caring for the baby, don’t “blame” it on the baby. Say something like, “My hands are busy now, but I can play with you in a few minutes. Why don’t you come snuggle next to me and I’ll read you a story?”

Another tip that some moms have found helpful is to talk up the older child to the baby. We moms love to go ga-ga and talk goo goo over our babies, but why not brag on the older sibling? “Ooh look at what big brother is doing! He’s building a block tower and it’s sooooo tall!” This can make the older child’s heart swell with pride. I heard this tip from a mom I admired, and when I did it, I could see the older child’s face practically beaming. Of course, the baby can’t understand a word you’re saying, but that doesn’t matter!

If your child does express some negative feelings towards the new baby, do not deflect it or try to change their feelings. It won’t work! It’s insulting and we know how WE feel when someone does that to us. Instead, mirror them by saying something empathic, like “It’s tough having to share mommy with the new baby sometimes.” You don’t have to agree with them, just empathize. When we do that, they feel safe sharing their feelings, and are able to process and work through them better. But if we can all bent out of shape they feel misunderstood and frustrated, which doesn’t help matters.

There’s one thing that some people who come to visit your new family may do that you need to watch for. This always made me cringe every time I observed it! They overreact every time the older children touch the baby.
Another thing to be careful of when it comes to visitors is this: Don’t let them focus 100% of their attention on the new baby. People do this too, and they don’t mean any harm. But imagine how it feels to the older child when everyone around him is completely besotted with “baby this and baby that”. They don’t even ask him questions except to say, “So how do you like the new baby?” LOL!

If your guests or family members do this, tactfully steer the conversation around.

Clueless Aunt: “So, little Johnny, how do you like the new baby so far?”

Little Johnny: “Um, he’s ok. I guess.”

You:Auntie, did you see the picture Johnny painted? It’s over there on the refrigerator. Johnny, would you like to show Auntie your new picture? Maybe she can get your paints out and you can draw a new one for her to take home to Aunt Joe.”

You might want to even ask family members and friends to bring a small gift for your older child when they come visit the baby. If they’re not cool like that, stash some presents or treats of your own, and whip them out when baby has a gift to unwrap.

Babies just aren’t that fragile!

It’s more important that your older child bond with the baby, and much of that takes place through touch. Train and teach your older kids how to hold and touch the baby. With a toddler, you may have to guide his hands or tell him to touch “Soft, like a butterfly.”

Don’t freak out whenever the older kids come around the baby, or they’ll come to resent him. You don’t want them to feel like useless, clumsy clods around the “precious” baby. It’s very hurtful to them. There were so many times that my older kids jostled the new baby like s/he was a sack of potatoes, and the baby never even woke up most of the time, much less minded.
Babies like stimulation and they find their big sibs extremely exciting! I noticed that my babies would turn their heads and follow a sibling around the room with their eyes. I made a point of saying this out loud to my older kids. I also reminded them that the baby KNEW them already because of hearing them for so many months in the womb.

They were really impressed by that.

Another thing alone these lines is, allow your toddler or older child to see and spend time with you as soon as possible after the birth. Don’t let other family members, including your husband if he’s overzealous, prevent them from reconnecting with you. Especially if you’ve been away at a hospital birth is this true. Don’t make a big deal over the new baby. Let them hug and kiss YOU and then notice the baby (who ideally should not be in your arms for this little reunion).

Don’t feel guilty.

It’s very common for moms to feel guilty about displacing their older child. I know I certainly felt this way when I was pregnant with my second child. I grieved for what I felt was a loss, and I was worried about my older son - as if he was losing something instead of gaining!
Remember that children have been dealing with the arrival of siblings since the beginning of time! They will be just fine, and will gain a playmate and perhaps a lifelong friend. Be positive about the transition and your child will likely pick up on your emotions.

Practice babywearing.

A baby sling or carrier can be invaluable for several reasons. For one, you can have your hands free in a sling, meaning you can play with a toddler almost like baby’s not there, where s/he naps peacefully. You’ll always have a free arm to pour a glass of milk, get a snack, offer a hug, a boost onto the swings, or to hold a book to read a story. Kids don’t mind so much the arrival of a new sibling as they mind the demand on your time. If you can still do most of the stuff you did before, it’s all good.

Be prepared for your own emotions.

Nature has set things up so that your priority is to your newborn infant, and that’s as it should be. A lot of times we are surprised by the ferocity of our own feelings of loyalty to our new babies. It’s not that we don’t love our toddlers, because we do.

But during the early weeks, don’t be surprised at your feelings. You might see your toddler differently and are a little afraid that you’ve fallen out of love with him!

Don’t worry! These feelings will subside, and you’ll soon be seeing your toddler through normal eyes. A little extra sleep helps too!

Thanks Carrie for permission to post your article and thanks for a great starting point in preparing Little Man for our new arrival!
