Making the Most of Preschool Educational Tools on a Budget

Children need to be positively stimulated from a very early age if they are every going to be able to achieve their full potential. One way of doing this is to invest in expensive learning tools and educational toys, however such budget breaking measures are not entirely necessary. It is possible to find a wide variety of activities, quizzes and worksheets online to help prepare even the most inquisitive preschooler for the educational journey that lays ahead of them.

Games and Quiz Tools
One of the best places for finding online quizzes with an educational theme is online testing service called ProProfs, a community driven site which provides tools to set up a wide variety of online games and quizzes.

Using ProProfs parents can set up tests for their children, using pictures, video and sound to help make them as stimulating as possible. Quizzes can be set up to provide the right answer in situations when the child has gotten something wrong, as well as providing an automated grading system based on parameters chosen by the quiz creator.

Online quizzes can be a great way to get your child to become familiar with computer technology from an early age. If your child is too young to effectively use a computer, the option always exists to download quizzes that other people have already created, using them offline to better help shape your child's learning experience.

Printable Worksheets
Worksheets come in all kinds of different types, from those that reflect traditional teaching mechanisms such as reading and writing, to ones which make use of more visually orientated learning methods such as connect the dots or drawing.

Many educational institutions provide worksheets for free, making them available in PDF format to download and use as you want. To find free worksheets all you need to do is a normal Google search for terms such as “preschool worksheets”, “printable worksheets” or “<subject name> worksheets” and you should be presented with many places you can download freely available material from.

If you find yourself needing worksheets that cover additional subject matters you can always buy premium educational worksheets and workbooks, either online or from your local bookstore.
A good tip for saving money on printing out (or worse buying) new worksheets every time you want your child to retry a subject is to protect the sheets in hard plastic covers (the kind used for storing photographs in is the best).  By covering the worksheet and getting the kids to use an erasable marker, all you have to do is wipe it off once they are done and the sheet is good to use again. Printing, scanning or photocopying worksheets whenever you need to use them may not seem like a big deal, but the costs really add up, especially in cases where sheets are being used multiple times.

These are just a couple of the ways active parents can help prepare their children for school, whilst not being forced to go outside their budget in order to get the job done. Education is one of the most important aspects of a persons life, if you have any other ways to help prepare a child for school without having to break the bank I would love to hear from you.

Buy Store Brands And Save!

If you can't stand the thought of clipping coupons, but you want to cut your grocery bill read on!

Starting today, buy only store brands because this alone will cut your grocery bill at least 25%.

Sure, there will be some items that your family insists must be name brands, but at least give the store brand a chance. I suggest doing blind taste tests which will certainly add an element of fun to any family meal.

Here's how:

1. So, let's say you're serving macaroni and cheese tonight. (and you don't have time to make homemade)
2. Buy 1 box of Kraft and 1 box of the store brand at your local grocery store.
3. Prepare both.
4. Serve both.
5. Let the family vote.

Remember, try it, you just might like it!

The Budget Diet is a diet for your wallet...not your waistline!

Suggestion from Tanya Peila: We also just combine the two boxes while cooking. Then your kids REALLY cannot tell the difference. Then next time I just use the store brand and they never know! The Budget Diet is a great way to start cutting your monthly grocery bill with no extra work just common “cents”!

Car Maintenance: Three Ways to Save Without Doing it Yourself

Image taken from: http://buy.new-and-used-cars.info/index.php?catid=10

Car maintenance is one of those necessary evils we would all like to avoid but can’t seem to get out of. Sometimes it’s hard to tell if it would be more expensive to pay for others to handle maintenance tasks or not do it at all and end up dealing with the consequences later. While paying for someone else to do the maintenance tasks on your car can be expensive, there are some great ways to save. No, I’m not talking about doing it yourself. Too many of us do not have the experience and knowhow to pull that off. Instead, try some more creative ways to get your car maintenance taken care of on a lower budget.

One option is to refer a friend. Auto mechanics are just like cosmetologists – they are always looking for new clients. Often times they will provide a discount on a service to those who refer their friends and family. Of course, it’s a good idea to work out the terms before the referral is made just to make sure a discount is given. Referring a friend to a good mechanic will not only help your friend out by providing them with a reliable solution for their car maintenance but it could also end up saving you a few dollars as well.

Another option is to negotiate. Auto mechanics have busy months and slow months. Do a little research and find out what months are typically slower for auto mechanics. Choosing to have your vehicle maintenance performed during the slower months may give you just the leverage you need to negotiate a better deal. Competition is fierce in the slower months which mean that mechanics are more likely to provide competitive prices.

The last suggestion to consider is to look into a group discount. Everyone who owns a car is in need of car maintenance. With a little organization - friends, family and neighbors can all work together to receive a group discount with an auto mechanic. It will be well worth it to him to discount his prices if he is getting more business with a group discount. A little research and coordination can really add up. So before you let an auto mechanic attach the vacuum pump to your A/C or change out your oil, consider putting these suggestions to good use to get some great discounts on your car maintenance.

Times Are Tough, But Vaca(tion) Doesn’t Have to be a 4-Letter Word

Most American families are feeling the crunch from these tough economic times. And a lack of capital has a tendency to make even the most light-hearted optimist turn a bit sour. If you’re lucky, you’ve got a job and you’re able to pay all your bills on time, but saving extra money is another matter entirely. And you can just forget about the summer vacation you had planned! The worst part is, with all of the financial stress facing today’s families, the thing you need the most is a little respite. And believe it or not, it can be yours with these helpful hints for a frugal family vacation.

1. Camping is the easiest and least expensive getaway for a family on a budget. If you already own camping gear, you’re pretty much good to go. But even if you don’t, think of your preliminary payout as an investment. Whatever the initial expense, just imagine how much you will save over time on travel and lodging by driving to a nearby destination and rouging it instead of flying to a city and spending tons of dough on hotels, food, and transportation. And the splendor of nature is certainly a more relaxing backdrop than crowded malls and noisy cab rides.

2. Visit friends or relatives. This is not only a good way to save on lodging, it can also be an incentive to see those you have neglected to keep up with in awhile (or ever). Doesn’t your mom have a second cousin somewhere if France? Time to go tour the Louvre! Many times, extended family members will be excited at the prospect of putting you up for a few days, as well as giving you an insider’s look at the area they live in, just for a chance to meet you (and you can return the favor at a later date).

3. Stay close to home. Take a week off work and explore options for entertainment in your area. Spend a day at the local beach, lake, or state park. Check for family discounts at museums, zoos, or other attractions. Or just get the kids out for a hike and a picnic. However, if you choose a stay-home vacation, just remember to ditch the electronics. Nothing is worse than fielding calls from work or other obligations while you’re supposed to be relaxing. And you’ll find that avoiding the media at large for a few days really helps you focus and enjoy spending time with your family.
