Help your Kids Prepare for the Upcoming School Year over the Summer

Summer is a time for kids to be kids. It’s a time to relax and soak up the sun. It’s also a time, though, where kids can end up getting behind on their studies. Parents who aren’t careful about how their children spend their summers might find a serious relapse on the progress of their students when they return again to school in the fall. That’s why it’s important for parents to prepare their children for school while still allowing them to have a fun-filled summer.

So how can you accomplish this? It might seem like there’s no way to be the “good guy” and still make sure your kids are keeping up on their studies. The simple answer is to make it fun! Learning can be fun – especially if parents get involved. Kids respond to challenges. They love to have goals and rewards as well. Make it an adventure, a journey. When kids see learning as a fun pass-time instead of the terrible H-word (homework), they are sure to respond positively.

So what can you do to help your kids prepare for the school year over the summer? Plenty! It’s all about the way you present it. For instance – start a book club! Kids see parents in book clubs so they know it’s something people do because they want to. Let them choose their own book. Read with them. Make it fun and select authors that appeal to children. Remember, when children are reading, children are learning.

Something else you can do that will not only teach your kids a thing or two about science, but will also provide an opportunity for quality time is a backyard volcano. Simply Google the recipe and follow the directions with your kids. As you embark on this fun science experiment, explain to them how it works and encourage them to ask questions. Participating in projects like these helps kids to realize that science can be fun.

Going on a road trip? Why not grab some games to take for the ride? Instead of giving them video games that will kill brain cells, have them try out a crossword puzzle or two. There are some great printables that can be found online for all different subject matters. Whether your child enjoys reading, writing or arithmetic, there are many fun printables to match. It will keep their brains active and most importantly – it’ll make the car ride a little quieter too!
